Day 25

Today was filled with lots of driving until we arrived in Omaha, NE!  After eating lunch at Wendy's, we arrived at the Omaha Zoo.  It was the first day I can honestly say that the Gouch family got hot and sweaty!  Too funny, I thought we would be so hot this whole trip :).  We enjoyed seeing all of the animals, although I have to think that the animals did not enjoy being "seen" as much, especially the gorillas!  One of them was literally pouting, as they were not allowed to go in part of their exhibit and were confined to a certain area.

Poor guy!  I have to confess, I think we all had at least one moment like this at some point on our trip :).

After leaving the zoo, we headed to Kansas City, MO for the night.  Unfortunately, we had a long detour due to the flooding of the Missouri River, close to 2-3 hours in fact.  It was sad to see all of the flooding.  We were excited to find a gas station in a town that had almost  completely closed up.  Harvey talked to a young man who said that everything was shut down.  He said that the water was being released at the dam at record rates.  They had planned for that to happen until July, but now are saying it would be September.  He said that they were  15 miles from the river and were seeing flooding.  If the levee breaks, they would all be 10 feet under water.  Many hotels were already closed up and people were just moving.  It was sad.

We finally found an Applebee's that was open around 9pm.  While we were eating dinner, tornado watches and warnings started appearing on the tvs.  Great!  It was crazy! We were trying to ease the children's fears and worries.  It looked like tornadoes were potentially all around us, but felt safe enough to make it to Kansas City.  We drove through awful storms and at one point saw one of the weirdest, meanest looking clouds I have ever seen.  We put on a movie for the little ones to watch so that they would not look out their windows.  Even though it was night time, the lightning would light up the whole sky for miles around.
When we finally arrived at the hotel at 11:30pm, we were so relieved!!

One of my friends said the next morning when I was on the phone with her that we leaving a trail of destruction behind us on this trip :).  Wildfires in Arizona, record heat wave in Dallas, and tornadoes in Omaha (just hours after we left)...thankfully, these all happened AFTER we left each place!  God has been good and prayers have been much appreciated!

What did not work: flooding detours and tornadoes!

What worked: God taking care of our family, once again!  "In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety." Psalm 4:8

Carried by His grace,
