Day 10
Today we went to the Houston Space Center. It was a hot day (of course it was, this is Texas ;). We enjoyed ourselves, although we are a little tired. Apparently there was quite a music festival going on a few blocks from our hotel this weekend. Therefore, all but about 7 rooms in this 26 story hotel were booked. This is a beautiful hotel, but unfortunately, the bar is in the open downstairs and the sound carries all the way up. So, even though we are on the 17th floor, it was like it was directly below us. Plus, the alarms on the elevators kept going off even way past midnight. For this part of our trip, Harvey booked two rooms for us, a "boys" room and a "girls" room. Thankfully, we were not in the boys room as sometime around 11pm, the couple in the room next to them got in a huge fight with lots of yelling. Harvey finally had to call security. So, this morning, we were all not feeling as rested as we had hoped.
The Houston Space Center was very crowded. This was a big weekend for them as a model of a shuttle was making its way in on a barge, and then an 18-wheeler, all the way from Kennedy Space Center in Florida!! They are quite excited to have this model; it is exactly like the ones that went up into space. By this fall, they hope to have it ready for the public to be able to tour it.
We learned some fascinating facts about what life is like for the astronauts in space. We even got to see Mission Control! We ended the day by talking to an employee from accounts payable at the Space Center who was therevisiting that day with her husband and daughter. Her enthusiasm and pride in the Center were obvious. Her dad had actually helped to build some of the shuttles, which helped to explain her eagerness to tell us about the shuttle model.
After we left, we headed to Galveston. It was fun to see the ocean, smell it--ahhh!!, and dip our toes in the warm water, if for only a few minutes! For those of you who know my husband, he did not dip his toes, and was content to let us enjoy the sand :). We ate dinner at a yummy, 100 year family-owned seafood restaurant called Gaida's.
That was our exciting day! Tomorrow we head to Baton Rouge to tour a swamp...
(Sorry these are the only two photos we have. The battery died on our little camera, so all of our other pics were taken on our other camera which will not load pics onto this laptop.)
