Day 11
Look out Duck Dynasty, the Gouches are hitting the swamps! Here is my disclaimer; I am not a botanist or a birder, so please excuse my poor descriptions or lack thereof :).
So, this was one of those days that Harvey planned that brought me a wee bit o' apprehension :). He had booked a swamp tour in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. It actually a swamp/man-made lake, if that makes sense! I have to say that, even though it was sooooooo hot and we were sooooooo sweaty, it really was interesting! There were also 3 others on our tour. We had a good tour guide, although he was a bit soft spoken and at times a little difficult for us to hear at the front of the boat. We saw some beautiful birds, beautiful plant life, a few turtles, and even a few alligators! In fact, one even smacked its tail in the water so close to us that they got a good laugh at how high I jumped ;). It was close to three hours long, and did I mention again it was hot? Well, it was, and afterwards we felt pretty gross, but thankful for all that we were able to see. I was thankful that we had our water bottles and for clean water to drink. I was also thankful for nymph flies & lily pads, as apparently they help keep the mosquitos away! Benjamin & I kept our mouths closed for one part of the tour where the nymph flies were abundant after the guide said that one had gotten stuck in his throat yesterday. Yuck!
I hope you enjoy the photos!
I forget what these birds are called. These birds had razor sharp beaks and were pretty cool looking all together in the tree.
I'll be honest. This is the one part I did not like. We went in a duck blind where duck hunting happens in this swamp. I felt claustrophobic. Benjamin is down and I am ducking because of the wasp flying around. Yuck!! I wanted to get. out.
Loved these lily pads and blooms! Did you know that lily pads are water repellant? Droplets of water just roll right off. Very cool! This picture does not do it justice, but there was spanish moss everywhere. It was beautiful in its own way!
Carried by His Grace,
