Day Nine-Danger, long post ahead!
Today I woke up to my mom calling me and singing "Happy Birthday" to me. And can I say, that even though I am now 43 years old, having my mom sing to me never. gets. old. I am grateful for her love and commitment to her children. She is an amazing woman with a caring heart.
After eating dinner, we went back to the hotel to enjoy our dessert. I have a tradition with Harvey and the kids on their birthdays where we go around and say how we are thankful for the birthday boy or girl. Trey told everyone that he wanted to do it for me. So, everyone went around and shared. It was a special time and nice way to end my day!
We then attempted to watch our church service online, but for some reason, we did not have a good signal where we were in Maine :(. The parts of it that we did hear were really good, though. I love our church and am thankful for the leadership and friends there.
For breakfast, Harvey found a yummy bakery called The Cookie Jar where we ate some amazing molasses doughnuts. They had children's books, so I sat on the couch after we ate and read a book to the little kids. It was a happy mom moment for me. From there, we spent a couple of hours at the Portland Head Lighthouse. I loved it. I guess the most surprising thing I was not expecting was the New England coastline being so rocky! Completely different than our NC coastline. We even hiked to a spot that was a little challenging for our crew, but we loved it. I was determined to dip my toes in the ocean, even though I knew it would be icy cold. Jonathan started having some leg/knee problems in Canada so he was not going to walk the trail with the others. But, when I told him I would help and that we could put our feet in the water, he changed his mind :). I was proud of him for persevering without complaining. It was hard, but he loved it...especially since the water was COLD!
After our time at the lighthouse, we drove back into Portland and ate lunch on a barge turned restaurant called DiMillo's. We could actually feel it moving in the water while we ate. It was a relaxing and nice birthday lunch. Harvey even convinced the waitresses to sing to me!
From there, we drove into Boston. We were happy to be staying at a Homewood Suites for 2 nights. Homewood Suites and Embassy Suites are two of our favorite hotels, because we have space to spread out and breakfast is included. We then drove into Boston to look around and see the city at night. It really reminded us a lot of New York City as far as the traffic and the nightlife. Harvey got a Boston Cream Pie for my birthday from the hotel that made the pie famous. It was better than any I had ever eaten and all of us really enjoyed it :). We then went to a hole in the wall restaurant that a local told us about down by one of the piers. It was called the "No Name Restaurant." They just bring in the fresh seafood off the boats and cook it. This trip is definitely a seafood lovers dream come true :).
