Day Sixteen
Delaware
Maryland
We arrived in D.C. and Harvey immediately noticed police cars everywhere, blocking off roads. He is so much more attentive to those kinds of things than I am (I was reading a book or talking to the kids or something :). Anyhow, we stopped the car and saw what we are almost certain was the President's motorcade. Regardless of one's views of the President, to see that many cars come in and one with a soldier with a major weapon on top, is pretty impressive!
We then toured some of the monuments and memorials. It was mine and Harvey's first time seeing the Korean Memorial, which was special as I have been told that my dad served during that time. The younger kids worked on their Junior Ranger badges (can I say again how much we have loved this free program :)?
We ended our day seeing the monuments lit up at night. We tried taking photos, but they just don't do it justice.
At the Jefferson Memorial
These two at the Korean War Memorial. Note the quote behind them, "Freedom is not Free."
Today, I was thankful that it is almost time to go home, for how strong my husband is (he has been lifting Jonathan in and out of our van), for the help that Trey has been with Jonathan and Elizabeth (giving her numerous rides on his shoulders and helping out with Jonathan), for the way Rebekah has helped the younger kids with their Junior Ranger work, for those who have fought for the freedom we have in this country, for family back home, and for God's grace. I do not understand it and know I never will on this side of heaven.
