Extreme Homeschool Field Trip (well, not really THAT extreme:)

Last weekend we had plans. Big plans. The plan was to go to Raleigh and see the Capitol Building and visit a couple of museums. We were even going to take a train ride to Raleigh! Well, we did all of these things and even managed not to get kicked out of the Capitol!

You see, if you live in NC, you know that we do not get much snow in most of the state. So, the one day in about two years that it snows, we left town! I was not really thrilled about leaving on a snow day. I love snow days (probably in part because they are so rare :). I like making a big breakfast, homeade hot chocolate, bundling everyone up in snow clothes (which usually takes thirty minutes) so we can play outside (which usually lasts about 7 minutes :). These are all things my mom did for us growing up. Now do not get me wrong, I was thrilled to go on a trip with sweet hubby and kids, just not so thrilled about traveling on a snow day. I just kept telling myself, "We're making a memory. Have a good attitude, we're making a memory." We did have fun.

Above is a picture of us by the train. It was fun, but quite chilly. We are not too sure the heat was on. Husband drove the car while my mom, the kids, & I rode the train and met us in Raleigh.

I think we were the only tourists in the city. Imagine the thrill and joy on the faces of the security guards and the lady at the desk of the Capitol when they saw sweet hubby, patient (but slightly frozen) grandmother, trying-hard-to-make-a-memory-and-highly-educate-the-four-kids-on-NC-history mommy, and four children walk into the Capitol. I loved it the most, I think, when the oh so sweet older lady at the desk "shshed" my one year old and told him to be quiet when he squealed. I so appreciated it, because one year olds listen so well when squealing happily (or unhappily for that matter). My thought was "Why open up to the public if you do not want the public in here?" I guess the public should not have taken four kids (two of whom were wearing cowboy boots. In an old building that does nothing but echo every. little. sound.). Anyhoo...we survived. Actually, that is no big deal. I knew we would survive. I guess the big news was that the security guards and the sweet old lady at the desk survived! AND, that that the governor himself did not kick us out :).

As a bonus, we even got to see "Sir Walter Raleigh" the famous NC groundhog who let us know by his amazing talents on a cold and cloudy day that Spring would come early! What a plethora of memories we were creating!!

I guess the last bit of good news was that we really did not miss that much playing in the snow and all its festivities. This was because not that much snow actually fell and then it quickly melted.

So, all in all, we made some memories, hopefully learned something about this fine state, and returned home all in one piece!

(When our little girl walked outside in the snow before leaving for the train, she excitedly said, "Look, I see my paw prints in the snow!")

I loved this! It sounds like a wonderful field trip for all. You are such a fun mom! I'm so glad I found your blog. BTW, your blog title is one of my *favorite* verses. I have turned the reference into a verb, often saying, "God really Ephesians 3:20'd this situation!" or "I can't wait to see how He'll Eph. 3:20 this..." We serve an Eph. 3:20 God, for sure. Have a blessed day! :)

I came across your blog today - love your snow day story! I have one of my own from a mini "field trip" (actually more mini-vacation) we just took this past weekend. I am a homeschooling mom of 4 blessings Boy 12, girls 9 & 10 and a little guy 3... and we are from Canada if your son still needs someone to interview by email or something.

Have a great day!
