Product Review

I have been asked to review a product that we recently used in our homeschool and really enjoyed!  I am on the e-mail list for The Old Schoolhouse which is how I found out about this product.  It is the
Download N Go unit study written by Amanda Bennett.

I realized one day that our children knew very little about Australia.  It was in January, and I was feeling like we were in a bit of a "slump."  We had all talked about Australia a lot, so I decided it was time to take a break from our regulary scheduled homeschooling and learn something new!

There were activities in it that my four old enjoyed (although he did not work on it as much as the older children did), all the way up to my 13 year old!  The instructions are given on how to make a notebook or a lapbook on Australia.  There are many, many internet links on different topics mentioned in the study.  The links made it very helpful as I did not have to research it myself.  There was also a comprehensive book list for the study, which was helpful to take to the library!

Geography, climate/weather, history, animals are just some of the topics explored in this study.  Among the internet links are also video clips, for example, from zoos in Australia.  The animal footage was enjoyable to watch.

What I liked about the product was that so much of the research was done for me.  I also loved the price, only $7.95, if I remember correctly!  When online with the study, the pages I needed were easy to click on.  For example, if I was on Day One and needed one of the mini books for that day, there was a link to click on to get to the back of the study where the page was with the needed material.  That was a good thing.  However, I wish page numbers would have been listed beside each link for when I had the hard copy in my hand, if that makes sense.

This Australia study is advertised as a five day study.  But, with our family, it definitely was more than five days' worth of work.  In fact, I personally feel that it would be difficult to process/complete all of the information offered in five days.

The only other thing that I wish the study would have included would be pictures of completed lapbooks.  Maybe it is not possible since this is a fairly new product.  For those more creative than I, photos may not be necessary.  For me, though, photos of completed lapbooks would help a great deal.

Overall, I would highly recommend Amanda Bennett's Download 'N Go Australia Study.  And the great news is, if Australia is not a study you are interested in right now, she has many more!!

For more information on this study, please go to The Old Schoolhouse Store.  Enjoy!

We have enjoyed the one Download and Go that we have done too! You are right that there is a lot of info in it! I should look at the list and see if there are some fun ones for the summer. (I think there is a pizza one, doesn't that sound like fun?!)

Kristi, I loved the Australia DNG! :) As for reviews...I did the TOS crew for nearly 2 years and really enjoyed it. However, in the end, it did get to be too much for me. Some people have no problem with the amount of reviews, and I also struggle with depression which I think led to me feeling overwhelmed. The products are spaced out over the year, some months have more reviews than others. And you generally have a 6 week deadline after you receive the product. :) If you feel that you can be flexible with your curriculum choices...then you would probably enjoy it! :) Let me know if you have more questions!
