Day 13
In front of the beautiful St. Louis Cathedral.
This was a hot, humid day in New Orleans :). We did a little sightseeing, although I must admit that something just felt "dark" about this city. I did not love it. Just being honest and real. I loved hearing street musicians, however. We took a buggy tour of the city, although our tour guide did not give us as much history as I would have liked. It made me sad to see an elementary school across the street from a bar and dangerously close to Bourbon Street. This city is definitely a mission field. We went to the Hurricane Katrina museum. As soon as you walked in was the piano of Fats Domino, as it was when it was found after the hurricane. It was a sad, somber museum.
After spending a few hours in New Orleans, we drove to Gulfport, MS where Harvey had done some mission work several years ago after Hurricane Katrina. He drove us to two houses he worked on the two years that he went down. It was neat for us and him to see where he slept in the National Guard Armory, as well as where he worked. The last house he worked on he was not able to see it completed, until now. They had rebuilt it from the ground up, and it was still standing :). Although he was not able to see the resident (an elderly lady) who still lived there, he was able to talk to her neighbor who still appreciated the work he and the team had done. She got his phone number, and later the resident called him and they got to talk again (after 6 years)! It was pretty special. He then took us to eat at his favorite seafood restaurant where he and the guys ate on both trips. The owner was nice; Harvey enjoyed talking to him again as well.
Seeing Gulfport rebuilt, as well as seeing Biloxi, MS where my brother was stationed in the Air Force were the highlights of my day! It was special to hear Harvey's stories and get to see in person where he had worked and served after Hurricane Katrina.
Carried by HIS Grace,
